Accomodation questions

1) Is accommodation easily available in Gothenburg?

Ans: Accommodation is no doubt the most tricky and difficult issue to meet. You will hopefully get one or two days stay at senior Pakistani student but after that you must get your own accommodation. Try to keep in touch with existing students and follow their advice. Arriving early may help in solving this problem as there will be comparatively less people looking for accommodation. Moreover try to come Monday or Tuesday so that you have enough time to look for accommodation. Everything is closed during weekends so don’t waste time and money.

2) How could I look for accommodation from Pakistan?

Ans: You can look for accommodations from Pakistan but mostly it is impossible to get as you need a Swedish personal no. There are some websites like http://www.boplats.se/, http://www.sgsstudentbostader.se and http://www.chalmersstudentbostader.se/en/. You can look at these websites hopefully you will get one. You will hopefully get one or two days stay at senior Pakistani student but after that you must get your own accommodation.

3) What is the general process to get accomodation?

Ans: When you will arrive here then it would be very difficult to get the accommodation as per your desire. Read following link for more information as well.

http://www.chalmers.se/en/sections/new-student/accommodation

The student accommodation is provided by these two companies:

1: Chalmers Student Bostader

In your admission letter a web link would be available, in which all the information is available about the Chalmers Student Bostader and a pin code will be available to signup for accommodation. This pin code is common for all new comers. Now You should send an email to this person (Sven Floman ) and he will tell you when he will be going to upload new rooms. So at that time you online before the time he has given to you and refresh the page frequently. Because the accommodations will be appear for a short moment because all other guys of CHALMERS from different countries will be doing the same. Because getting an accommodation at Chalmers Student Bostader is the game of seconds, if you miss the chance then you send the email again (to the same person mentioned above) and repeat the same procedure again. This is all about the first method.

2: SGS student Bostader

This would take time but hopefully you will get accommodation. In this method, first you fill a form and attach the photo copies of your admission letter (Chalmers or Gothenburg University), first page of the passport and your resident permit (But now you have not the resident permit so do not take tension and just send the form and photocopies of admission letter and first page of passport). Now all these things you have to send via fax. The fax number is mentioned on the application form. As they will receive your documents, they put you in queue but still you are unable to book a room. When you will get your resident permit, then you must send the photocopy of your resident permit via fax as soon as possible. Then after two or three workings days you will get an email from SGS Student Bostader in which your pin code and login Id will be given. If you do not get email from them then you have to send email (mentioned on the attached form) and ask them about the account. When you will get the pin code and login Id, Now you just login at their website and book a room. But the chances of getting a room depend upon your queue number. So it is better to apply as soon as possible.

4) What airline should I choose for traveling?

Ans: The travel agents in bigger cities of Pakistan will be in better position to guide you about this issue. You should take this decision based on your survey and information from different travel agents. Mostly they will make route via Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Etihad and Turkish airways are the cheaper airlines. Turkish operates from Karachi and Islamabad while Etihad operates from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. But please don’t rely on one travel agent; it’s always good to have an estimate of price from more than one travel agents.

5) Should I buy an online Ticket?

Ans: If you get a cheaper ticket online then you can buy. There is no harm or problem in buying an online ticket. We recommend that you should do a through research and decide what suits better to you.

6) How could I reach Chalmers after landing in Gothenburg? If I am coming from Landvetter airport?

Ans:  If you arrive at Gothenburg airport directly, then you can simply take the Landvetter bus (or airport bus) called Flygbussarna which will take you to the city. Get off the bus at the stop named as Körsvagen by telling the driver in advance that you want to go to this stop. This bus will cost you 75 SEK for one trip. From Körsvagen stop, take tram # 6 or 8 comes towards Chalmers (ask anyone nearby about the right direction). The tram will pass by a tunnel and Chalmers is the first stop after the tunnel (journey is hardly 5 minutes).

7) If I could land at some other place say Stockholm or Copenhagen then how could I reach Gothenburg and Chalmers?

Ans: your question has two parts i.e how to reach Gothenburg from some other destination and second is how you could reach Chalmers after reaching Gothenburg.

If you land at Stockholm airport, there will be various options available to travel to Gothenburg. You can take Swebus express, GoByBus, SJ train or X-2000 train. X-2000 can be quite expensive at times but it is the fastest train in Scandinavia and takes little over three hours to reach Gothenburg. Try to look for last minute ticket of SJ (Intercity) train as it will be cheaper and takes around 5 hours to reach your destination. Last minute ticket is special term used for tickets available before 24 hours of train’s departure. Among the buses, GoByBus is the cheapest one. From Copenhagen, you can take GoByBus or train to reach Gothenburg. It takes around 4 hours and is relatively cheap as compared to coming from Stockholm.

If you are coming by bus or train, you will arrive at Nils Ericsson terminal of central station of Gothenburg. Get out of the central station and take a tram no 7 or 10 etc from the Bus Stop infront of Central station. .Buy a tram card of SEK 100 or SEK 430 from pressbyran at central station. Mostly you will see the screen in the tram which will show you the name of stop otherwise the driver will announce the upcoming stop. Keep an eye on screen; Chalmers is two stops after the stop named Vasaplatsen and one stop after the stop named Kappelsplatsen.

Life in Göteborg

1) What kind of jobs is available in Gothenburg?

Ans:  There are mostly odd jobs available but are not easy to get. During the first two quarters, study load will be huge and you won't find any time to search or do any kind of job. However afterwards in third and fourth quarters in some of the programs, it becomes possible to do job on weekends. In summer, it is possible to find job relatively easily, but still it needs effort. We recommend you to register at SFI (Swedish for immigrants) for Swedish language course once you get your personal number. Though it may sound boring, but facts have proved that those who continue the course find it easier to get job in summer. There is another job which is an odd job. Its advertisement delivery job called as Reklam. Just ask one of your senior already working with reklam to introduce you or call their office.  This job takes three to fours hours and you work only on weekends. Depending on the number of districts, you can earn 1000-1300 SEK per month. Many desi students also work in cloth market during summer holidays. You will need contact of Pakistani or Indian person doing this business and you will help him in setting up the temporary cloth stall in the market daily or on weekends. This job usually gives 200-300 SEK per day and you work from early morning till late in the evening. There are few Pakistanis who work in McDonalds in the night. This cleaning job starts late night and continues till early morning. You will need the contacts of Pakistani and Indian contractors for getting this job. You will earn approx 4000-5000 SEK per month. There is another job called as GP delivery. You will have to deliver newspaper very early in the morning around 3:00 am. This job is very hard to find these days as you must know some Swedish to get this job or good reference from some someone already working. You can earn 6000 to 7000 SEK by doing this job.

2) Can I bear my expenses easily in Gothenburg by doing some job? Are they easy to get?

Ans: It has been mentioned several times on different forums that don't come to Sweden if you can't afford your living expenses. Because of economic recession all kinds of jobs are nearly impossible here. For more detail see answer of above question.

3)  I need information about what bank accounts are available? How could I open it?

Ans: Although you can open bank account in SEB, Swedbank, Nordea without even having your personal number. But I personally recommend Nordea due to some special attractions. It will be easier and relatively cheap for you to get bank statement, credit card and internet banking from Nordea. Moreover you will always find very few people in queue at Nordea while at SEB you will have to wait longer for your turn. Try to get internet banking and credit card at the earliest. There is no interest fee on the transactions made by credit card and you don’t need to keep cash with you all the time.

4) what are monthly expenses in Sweden?

Ans: In Gothenburg the monthly expenses are usually around 2500 SEK to 3500 SEK per month depending upon your living style.
